Air Serbia marks fourth anniversary of flights to New York
Today, on 23 June, Air Serbia is celebrating four years from the historic flight to New York in 2016, which was the beginning of the direct air link between Serbia and the United States, after a pause of almost a quarter of a century. The Serbian airline is the only one in the region with regular direct long haul flights throughout the year, and has operated a total of 719 round trips, carrying almost 280,000 passengers.
After the temporary suspension of air transport due to the coronavirus pandemic, Air Serbia recommenced commercial flights to New York on 6 June. The capacities of flights to "The Big Apple" have almost been filled entirely, which is why the number of long haul flights was increased to two a week, and starting on 29 June, the national airline will be operating flights on this route three times a week.
"We are very proud to be the only ones in the region to offer direct flights to New York, whose launch represented a significant milestone at the time of their introduction, confirming the strength of our business strategy and contributing to the development of tourism and business cooperation between the South-eastern Europe and the United States. Many did not believe it, but we have managed, in a relatively short time, to secure our first wide-body aircraft, the necessary permits, and to undertake all steps necessary to start the flights," said Duncan Naysmith, CEO of Air Serbia.
With the introduction of transatlantic flights on 23 June 2016, Air Serbia connected the region and the United States for the first time after 24 years. Since then, the national airline had been operating flights to New York between two and six times a week, depending on passengers demand and the time of year. Since the commencement of the route to the present day, Air Serbia has been connecting the countries of the region with North America, not just with New York, but also with numerous other cities, thanks to cooperation with multiple airlines in North America.
Belgrade-New York flights are operated using an Airbus A330, named after legendary Serbian scientist and inventor Nikola Tesla. With a configuration with 18 seats in Business and 236 seats in Economy Class, Airbus A330 is the largest plane in the Air Serbia fleet. The national airline’s flights are landing into John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.
